ARE YOU RETAINING YOUR TALENT?

ARE YOU RETAINING YOUR TALENT?

My conversation with a leader yesterday went like this:

Our #1 struggle is hiring and keeping talent. It is hard to find people who want to work and then when we hire them, they often quit. Our business is growing but we can’t keep up. I do see that the leaders that build relationships with their employees do a better job of keeping them.

I’ve heard this from many leaders over the years and am hearing it continually the past few days. The general consensus is that we can’t find enough employees. What I don’t always hear is leaders making the connection between how they treat people and whether or not they keep them.

The sharp ones get it. It isn’t just about how much we pay. Every employee will work stay with a company and boss for a longer period of time if they trust their leadership and if they feel that they are treated as more than just someone who can get work done.

What are you doing as a leader to make this connection?

It really is not rocket science.

  • Ask them about how they are doing
  • Check in on how their life is outside of work
  • Let them know what you appreciate about them and their work
  • Tell them about you
  • Connect them with others on the team

At some point, it gets beyond the relationships to the work they are doing.
Ask: Are they using their skills and talents? What ideas do they have for improvements?

Don’t’ underestimate the power of engaging people by getting to know them and getting them involved in their work.

To hire and retain talent – Connections Matter.
